"Reel Gardening" for food security

In the last newsletter we mentioned that HGA were to be recipients of 400 of Reel Gardening’s vegetable seed packages and are pleased to say that 200 have been received thus far and over the course of May and June were distributed to communities in the Umzimkhulu, Franklin, Donnybrook and Highflats areas. At each handover a planting demonstration was given and it was exciting to see how quickly the participants grasped the process and then proceeded to offer the demonstration to beneficiaries who arrived later. Although early winter is a tough time to be planting, on follow up visits to the communities it has been encouraging to see how many households have had success, with their gardens emerging with pea, spinach, beetroot and radish seedlings. The seed boxes are purported to be able to feed a family of four for a year which would greatly improve the food security of the beneficiaries if this is the case. We would like to thank Shoprite and Rhodes Quality for sponsoring the boxes we have received to date and to the Environmental Sustainability Agency for facilitating it all.
